Alberta Cross/Pete Yorn 10/24/09

There was supposed to be a post entitled “Alberta Cross/Pete Yorn 10/22/09″ as well, but that is a long story. The short version is that the Rococo Theatre’s (in Lincoln, NE) website said that cameras were not allowed and that anyone caught with one would be ejected immediately (or something similar)… so I only brought my point and shoot. Curse of the Bad Lighting from the Granada apparently carried over to the Rococo, and everything was blurry as can be. Total rubbish. Good show regardless… Alberta Cross and Pete Yorn both made me forget that it was cold and rainy outside. (Also, hello to Amy!)

As for the real content of this post, I found myself in Bloomington, IN at the Bluebird Nightclub last night where Alberta Cross absolutely killed it. I’m loving them more each time I see them. (Sadly it’ll be awhile before I see them again!) If you haven’t heard their stuff, it is on their MySpace page. As usual, Pete and Co. were phenomenal, and this time I can finally say that all my begging and pleading paid off as song #2 on the night’s setlist was “I Feel Good Again” (Junior Kimbrough cover). (And hello to Cammy, Carly, and anyone from the Pete Yorn forums!)

Again, the lighting wasn’t real fantastic to work with. I’ve managed to put myself right in direct line with some of the canister lights, which can either lead to an awesome shot or epic fail. If it says anything, I shot over 300 photos, and kept… 17. I just need to get to shows earlier and figure out where I’m standing at… as long as I’m still front row! ;)

Alberta Cross/Pete Yorn 10/19/09

I really should have named this post the following:

The Granada Had Really Bad Lighting That Night or maybe I Could Really Use Some Faster Glass but really to cover my bases, we’re really going to call it Alberta Cross/Pete Yorn – A Study in Low Light and Back-Lit Situations: Silhouettes.

I had been in contact with Alberta Cross in the past few months working on a setlist project for both Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits Festivals, so it was nice to actually get to hear them live this time around. They did not disappoint! Pete and his gang was also amazing, as usual. I didn’t get to hear “Burrito” or “I Feel Good Again” (Junior Kimbrough cover), but that is okay.

I also met a few new faces at the show, so here is a shout out to Carrie, Colleen and Drew! It was nice meeting you all :)

Antennas Up 10/15/09

I can never pass up the chance to shoot amazing acts at the Kathouse Lounge… especially when its Antennas Up (check out their new site!) It’d been nearly a year since I had seen the guys perform here in Manhattan… I had forgotten how much fun they are. Its probably a sign they should play in the MHK a bit more. (hint, hint!) Valuable photography lesson learned this evening: its hard to keep shots in focus when dancing. That is not a bad thing though.

Bitter Moon 10/09/09

Tonight was a good test of the 50mm f/1.8 lens, I didn’t even bother bringing any others. No flash, just the lighting in the basement of Auntie Mae’s Parlor. Its a good thing I’ve got friends that don’t mind me snapping ridiculous amounts of photos of them – all I did during their set was tweak settings and just shoot away.

Los Habaneros 10/4/09

Leave it to the wonderful folks of German descent living in Kansas to come up with a festival combining The Wizard of Oz with Oktoberfest. This weekend was OZtoberfest in Wamego, KS. Food, music, Munchkins (the original remaining ones from the movie!), and talks were sprinkled throughout the weekend. Los Habaneros performed on the entertainment stage on a sunny Sunday afternoon. I am regretting it now, but I most certainly should have put on sunscreen….
